Bicycling and More Bicycling
Somewhat under construction, but all pages say that, right?
Current Goal
Oct 1996, 510 miles, 20,000 feet of elevation,
possible temperatures > 100F, no sleep, 36-48 hours.
Sounds like fun? I hope so! I've done Furnace Creek 508 as a 4
person relay team. I've crewed for a good friend as he qualified for
RAAM on this course. Now, I'm doing it myself solo.
Why? Because the road is there? To push the edge of mind and body?
Because I'm a sucker for peer pressure? To experience? Because I've
already crossed the line of bicycling sanity? To watch people's jaws
drop open? Because I enjoy spending futile hours trying to explain
why I do things like this?
Some Previous Events
- Whitney Classic 1993, 1994:
For two years now I've done a ride from Death Valley to
Mt. Whitney. Death Valley is the lowest point in the United States,
and Mt. Whitney is the highest mountain in the 48 states. The
ride is 136 miles and has a 24 hour offical cut off. The first
year I rode for 14 hours and ended up stopping about 10 (???)
miles short. The second year, I flew through it finishing
just under 13 hours.
More about Whitney Classic.
- Whitney Classic 1995:
This year, I crewed for a very good friend of mine, Tim Cockerham. He
did a great job and finished the ride in under 17 hours.
- Furnace Creek 508 Team Race 1994:
Team Woodchucks!
- Pacific Crest Tour 1994:
Tour San Diego, CA to Ashland Oregon, June 1994.
1516.1 miles and 104,770 ft. of elevation in 13 days.
